The Cats

We are a family owned and operated business since 1937.


     Borden Mercantile was started during the Great Depression of the 1930's by Harry Borden. Harry was finding feed too expensive to buy so he started mixing his own in a barrel with his arm.  Harry began mixing extra feed to sell to support his family and continued to grow the business over the years by expanding into animal, garden, and bee supplies.  Harry's descendants continue on with his legacy and commitment to serving the people of Saanich and beyond.  

 

 

Our Cats


     We have several cats at our store to keep the rodents at bay and customers are welcome to pet and visit with them.  Currently we have Roxy, Cagney, and Lacey on patrol.  Roxy is a calico female who enjoys being petted but can be shy sometimes.  Cagney is a lanky tabby who is quite friendly and loves attention.  Lacey is Cagney's sister and she has tabby stripes along the top part of her body, including a little mustache under her nose and a white belly and legs.  Lacey is also quite friendly and she enjoys napping and playing fetch with her bouncy ball.

Cagney
I'm a vocal gal who loves to be petted.  I love spending time both inside and out, as well as curling up with my sister in the baskets on the Service Counter.

Lacey
I'm a cuddly girl who loves to play fetch with bouncy balls.  Whenever the humans lose my ball I just steal a new one from the shelf.

Roxy
I'm a shy girl who likes to be petted when approached calmly and quietly.  I love to watch the red light of the till scanner when the humans scan things.  Though I am shy, at night I am a rebel, pulling out all my toys and throwing them all over the store.

Our Services


Retail-From pet food/supplies, and feed, to bee, garden, farm, and soap/candle supplies

Carryout Service-Any large items can be ordered through the till and one of our staff members will deliver it directly to your vehicle.

​

Wholesale-We offer wholesale accounts to landscapers, contractors, and body care businesses with a valid business licence.

​

Delivery-We offer local delivery of any product we carry two or three days a week.

Saanich - $20 + $5 fuel surcharge

Oak Bay - $25 + $5 fuel surcharge

Victoria - $25 + $5 fuel surcharge+
Esquimalt - $25 + $5 fuel surcharge
View Royal - $25 + $5 fuel surcharge
Central Saanich - $30 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Highlands - $30 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Willis Point - $30 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Colwood - $30 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Langford - $30 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Metchosin - $35 +7.50 fuel surcharge
North Saanich - $35 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Sidney - $35 +7.50 fuel surcharge
Sooke - $45 +10 fuel surcharge

Additional Costs

10 + (20kg) bags of feed/bird seed/pet food: $0.50 per bag + Zone freight
5 + (bales) of Hay/Straw/Peat: $1 each per bale + Zone Freight

     We are an independent business that works hard to source our products locally wherever we can, such as many of our plants from local greenhouses and the Borden farm.  As we are family owned and operated, we are able to offer more personalized service through product knowledge, carryout service, and special ordering products to suit individual needs.
